Defects Module Overview

A defect is an error in coding or logic that causes a program to malfunction or produce incorrect or unexpected results. The Defects module in ManagementStudio enables you to log and manage issues against various objects, such as Applications, User Migrations, Devices, Projects, or Deployment Units. You can view and track all defects recorded within a project.

Accessing Defects

To view defects:

  • Select Defects from the left pane.

    • Choose My Defects to display defects assigned to you.
    • Choose All Defects to view all defects within your project.

Defects Layout

The Defects module utilises the Common Grid Layout, consistent with other modules such as Applications, Users, Deployment Units, Devices, and Bespoke modules. For an overview of grid features, refer to the Common Grid Functionality article.

Additional custom fields can be configured under Administration → Defects → Grid Config.

Creating a New Defect

Defects created within the Defects module are recorded against the project. To log a defect against a specific module (e.g. Device), create the defect from within that module.

Steps to create a new defect:

  1. Select the target module (e.g. Devices) or the Defects module, as appropriate.
  2. Click New in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  3. Enter the required details:
    • Fill in Short Description and Business Impact.
    • Select the appropriate Process and Sub Process (defaults apply).
  4. Click New to save the defect.

Using the Context Menu

Right-clicking on the grid opens the context menu, enabling multi-select actions. Select single or multiple items using left-click, Ctrl or Shift + click, then right-click for options.

Context menu actions:

  • Open Details: View the details tab for one or more selected items. Can be opened in a new tab or window.
  • New Note: Add notes to one or more defects (displayed in the Details tab).
  • New Task: Create a new task linked to the selected defect(s). Tasks will also appear in the Tasks Module.
  • Move to Process: Change the Process and Sub Process for one or more defects.
  • Teams: Assign team members (e.g. engineers, delegates) to the defects.
  • Update Fields: Bulk update text, dropdown, and date fields in the Details tab.
  • Update Custom Form: Bulk update custom form data for multiple defects.
  • Copy: Bulk copy data from one or more fields (see below for details).
  • Lock: Lock or unlock defects; locked records cannot be edited.
  • Archive: Set defects to archived status. Archived defects are only visible using Segments → Other Filters → Archived.
  • Delete: Mark defects for permanent deletion. Defects are deleted after a defined period but can be restored using Segments → Other Filters → Deleted and the context menu.

Bulk Copying Field Information from the Grid

You can copy information from multiple defects on the grid using the context menu.
